What’s the connection between coffee and skincare?

Ah, now we’re talking! You’re well aware about the stimulating effects of coffee when it reaches your belly. It’s the OG drink that was meant to ‘give you wings’. But when it is applied topically on your skin it has the opposite effect. Thanks to the antioxidants present in coffee, including phenols, it has a calming effect on the skin by fighting those free radicals that can otherwise lead to skin damage. But why stay on the surface? Let’s go deeper and see what all our favourite coffee can do for your skin!

Hydration and Skin Lightening:

Coffee is a rich source of Vitamin B3 or Niacinamide in particular, a water-soluble nutrient that helps improve a variety of skin concerns. It helps improve the skin’s protective barrier, therefore leading to an improved ability for moisture retention, thus not letting the skin dry out. In addition to this, Vitamin B3 has the ability to break down excess melanin that makes the skin dark in patches due to exposure to UV rays. Niacinamide can target pigmentation and dark spots and bring the colour of the skin back to its original form.

Relief from sun burns:

Coffee has a well-stocked quota of melanoidins, the brown-coloured nitrogen-containing compounds that have strong antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and prebiotic properties. This makes coffee an extremely beneficial skincare ingredient for people with sensitive skin who experience inflammation after exposure to sun. This doesn’t mean you can skip the sunscreen, but it goes at length to calm the skin down at any level of sunburn

Acne Treatment:

Coffee contains another bioactive compound called Chlorogenic Acid or CGA that makes it extremely beneficial in cosmetic formulations. CGA is known to have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. This is a super functional compound that works double time to calm down any flare-ups that happen due to increased sebum production and inflammation.

Now, we don’t want to turn this into a class 10 Chemistry class, so we’ll skip the other compounds, but you get the gist. Coffee skincare is as legit as it can be, and it’s all packaged and ready to be shipped at the click of a button. Let’s look at all the options you have.

1. Coffee face wash:

Deep-cleanses the skin and increases its collagen production for a more youthful and even-toned result. It literally wakes up your skin from it dull slumber and leaves you with a clean and fresh look.

2. Coffee face scrub:

3. Coffee peel-off mask:

Removes blackheads and brightens the skin up with an additional ingredient, Kaolin clay. It also ensures that your skin pores are unclogged and all excess oil is removed.
