Understanding Skin Care

Gentlemen, let's be honest. When it comes to skin care, how often do you just scrub your face with some water and a bar of soap and call it a day? The truth is that this approach can do more harm than good to your rugged good looks in the long run.

Just like working out, eating healthier or any other form of self-improvement, a good skin care routine requires a little bit of discipline, commitment and understanding what works best for you. It's not only important to use the right products but the order in which you apply them is also key to an effective skin care regimen.

Step 1: Cleanse

The first step to healthy skin is to cleanse it from dust, pollution, excess oil and harmful bacteria. This should ideally be done twice a day with a mild cleanser that wont strip your skin of essential moisture.

Besides a good cleanser, introducing a good exfoliating product like a scrub or a loofa into your routine can work wonders for the skin. This helps remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin and exposes the newer skin underneath. The frequency and level of exfoliation required depends on your skin type but it is recommended to do this at least once a week for best results.

Step 2: Nourish
Cleansing and exfoliating can leave the skin dry. Using a hydrating face mask or a nourishing face oil can help seal in natural moisture and essential oils that naturally hydrate your skin.

A toner, which helps maintain the pH levels of your skin, can help prepare your skin for the following steps.
Step 3: Protect
A good sunscreen is essential to any skin care regimen. Not only does it protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun but it has proven benefits that help slow signs of premature ageing.

Products designed to treat specific skin issues such as acne, dry skin or even fine lines and wrinkles should be applied before your sunscreen to allow for deeper penetration and better results.
Step 4: Moisturise
The final step to keeping your skin looking young, healthy and well nourished is of course regular hydration. This means drinking enough water and applying a moisturiser to help lock in those essential oils.

Remember to repeat steps 1, 2 and 4 before you go to bed to ensure you wake up fresh and ready to put your best face forward.
